The city of Tabriz is situated 600 kilometers west of Teheran. It is one of the largest cities in Iran and also the capital in the province of Azerbajdzjan. Tabriz is one of the largest and oldest rug-making areas in Iran, resulting in a large variety of designs and quality of manufacture.A Tabriz rug usually has a short pile, with strong reds or blues on an ivory background. The patterns can consist of a centrally placed medallion surrounded by arabesques, weeping willows and cypresses. Another popular motif is the four seasons, which represent the life of the Persian farmer during spring, summer, autumn and winter. Tabriz rugs are frequently of higher knot density, and can be heaver and thicker than other Iranian carpets. They are woven with a symmetrical knot on a cotton foundation.
