Turkmen carpets are produced in Central Asia- now encompassing the countries of Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, and Tajikistan. Many of the carpets, large and small, present regimented rows of guls (Farsi word for flowers) usually of varying shades of red or brown for the background color. These were all brown in the distant past of Bokhara rugs. This term is now obsolete. The city of Bukhara in Uzbekistan produces rugs that are easily identified by bold, allover patterns of guls. A gul is a rosette or floral medallion, as the word gol (or gul) is the Farsi word for flower. These can appear in many different styles, with each having a specific meaning. Round ones symbolize celestial bodies, such as stars or something larger such as the sun or moon. There are geometric shapes as well, Ñsometimes known as ÒelephantÕs feetÓÑwhich also feature delicately woven designs in the middle of them.Turkmen carpets are unusually soft and silky to the hand, with saturated earth tones; typically red, sienna, brown, and green.
