The term “Herati” is a design reference, rather than a regional reference. As such, Herati designs can be found in a wide variety of regional Persian carpets. The Herati pattern is based on an old Mongolian-Turkish design consisting of an all-over, repeating series of elements featuring flower inside a rhomb surrounded by four acanthus-leaves, or, sometimes, fish. The Herati pattern is immediately recognizable and dates back to the late 15th century from the city of Herat in northwestern Afghanistan. Beginning in the early 19th century, regional Persian designs such as Tabriz and Bidjar rugs began to make use of the Herati pattern, which is now widespread.
