Kashan rugs arise from one of Iran’s oldest cities, with sections dating back to 6000 BC. The origin of the Kashan rug dates back to the 17th century during the Safavid dynasty, though some experts believe that some of the rugs are at least a century older.
Kashan rugs are among the most beautiful of all Iranian carpets, with easily recognizable, high quality, finely-woven floral motifs in reds, blues, and ivories.
Kashan rugs frequently incorporate silk into their designs, in both the pile and the foundation, which is otherwise cotton. Knot density can be quite high, which is permitted (and needed) when silk is used.
