When is it Time to Clean Your Rug?

  1. Now. (See Spring Cleaning Event, above.)
  2. If your rug begins to look dull in color or the pile is matted, it's time to bring it in for professional cleaning.
  3. As soon as possible after an accident or incident in your home.

First, Rotate Your Rug

Rug rotation can make a substantial difference in the lifespan of your carpet. Once a year you should rotate your rug and prepare it for a thorough cleaning. This will help to even out any wear in the pile or sun bleaching.

Then, Beat Your Rug (No really!)

Beating is a time-honored technique to loosen dirt that is deeply embedded the pile. Regular beating will extend the life of the rug. If you have an upright vacuum, it has a beater bar that will do the job well. Move any furniture off the rug, flip it upside down, and carefully vacuum the back. Afterward, you will probably observe some dirt on the floor and on the face of the rug; vacuum this up as well.

Finally, Vacuum Your Rug

Vacuuming is critical to maintain the beauty and durability of your rug —but not just in areas that are visible. Make sure that from time to time you vacuum the less accessible spots, underneath chairs, sofas, beds, and tables. Areas of a rug that are inert, such as under the middle of a bed, can and will attract moths, so it is important to vacuum the entire rug thoroughly at least once or twice a year.
